A Report On The C-E Translation Of A Political Text From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence Theory

The practice report is based on the translation text of some chapters in the book Evolution of a World State: Study of the Generation and Transformation of Global Collective Identity.According to analysis of the text type,the translator finds the book belongs to a political text.Through analysis of the characteristics of the text language,the translator selects Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory to explore the characteristics of three aspects in the text,and focuses on the translation methods and skills at the lexical,syntactic and textual levels in order to achieve good reader’s response of the English translation.At the lexical level,the author mainly analyzes four types of words: professional terms,person names,idioms and culture-specific expressions,and adopts translation methods such as literal translation,free translation,transliteration and addition.At the syntactic level,there are many non-subject sentences and long and difficult sentences in the text.The author firmly grasps the key features of Chinese parataxis and English hypotaxis,analyzes the sentence structures,and converts subject-predicate sentences to passive sentences as well as adds subjects to make complete sentences.At the textual level,the author focuses on analyzing the textual style and the cohesive relationship between sentences,and discusses how to clarify the logical relationship between sentences under the framework of Functional Equivalence Theory,and achieves functional equivalence in textual level through effective cohesive methods.The author uses Functional Equivalence Theory to guide the practice of text translation,so that the translation text can be more faithful to the original text,and accepted by readers.Through this translation practice,the author deeply understands the complexity and diversity of translation activities.Translators must not only fully understand the original content,master the characteristics of both language and text,but also possess knowledge of certain cultural backgrounds,master both Chinese and English,and select the scientific translation theory as a support.The author hopes that the translation of the practice report on the political text will provide some reference for similar translation practices in the future.
