| As an indispensable part of text construction, metadiscourse is very common in the text.Hedges are an important part of interactive metadiscourse, which can help authors of academic papers realize the interaction with the readers. From the perspective of the communicative action theory, this paper discusses the translation of hedges, and examines the translation methods and strategies of them with translation examples, especially focusing on whether the translation retains the interaction of the original text.It is found that the four universal validity claims(appercetion, authenticity, sincerity and correctness)of communicative action theory play an important role in guiding and evaluating the translation of hedges. For different types of hedges, different translation methods should be adopted according to their pragmatic and interpersonal functions in the discourse. For writer-oriented hedges, attention should be paid to protecting the objectivity of the text,so as to protect the author;for attribute hedges,in order to take into account the language features and writing habits of the target language,we can flexibly change the position according to the circumstances and translate them according to the context;for reliability hedges,we should consider the unequal use of English and Chinese modal verbs;for reader-oriented hedges,we should pay more attention to the degree of tendency and sincerity of the text to the reader. Finally, this paper makes a summary of the translation strategies and methods of hedges, which is hope to deepen the understanding of metadiscourse and hedges and provides some reference for other translators. |
