A Study On The Influence Of Translator’s Ideology On Celebrated Cases Of Judge Dee-An Authentic Eighteenth-Century Detective Novel

Robert van Gulik,a famous sinologist and novelist,achieved great success in his Celebrated Cases of Judge Dee—An Authentic Eighteenth-Century Detective Novel.Since then,he has had countless ties with Judge Dee novels.At present,most academic studies on his translation have mainly focused on the translation methods and strategies used but seldom discussed the cultural issues behind his translation,and the issue of Gulik’s ideology has rarely been studied.Gulik devoted himself to studying Chinese culture all his life and had insights into Chinese culture,which has enabled him a different translator’s ideology from other translators.Furthermore,his ideology has affected his translation activities.From the perspective of the translator’s ideology,this study first discusses and summarizes Gulik’s ideology.Then,the formation of Gulik’s ideology is discussed from several influencing factors.Finally,the relations between Gulik’s ideology and his translation activity are analyzed by the case study of Celebrated Cases of Judge Dee—An Authentic Eighteenth-Century Detective Novel.This study suggests that Gulik’s ideology revealed in his translation was evidently contrary to the Western mainstream ideology at that time,and was a pro-Chinese translator’s ideology.His ideology was closely related to his education experience,work experience and life experience.His pro-Chinese ideology not only influenced the translation purpose,the selection of translation materials,and the translated text,but also impacted and subverted the Western mainstream ideological attitudes towards Chinese culture to a certain extent and promoted a new ideology to appear and develop.
