Research On Susan Haack’s Epistemological Thought

Susan Haack’s epistemological thought is based on a cognitive theory perspective that interprets and explores truth with "neoclassical pragmatism".With a keen eye,she caught the shortcomings of modern naturalism and scientism epistemology,and then transformed the basic coherence theory to reasonably reconcile the contradictions of modern pragmatism epistemology.In addition,Haack treats her theory and theories in a dialectical manner to truth,emphasizing that it is only a choice,the "third way" for epistemology to break the deadlock and then develop.It does not exhaust all the choices of epistemology,compared to previous theories.This is a commendable and worth learning place.First of all,through a detailed analysis of the historical background and theoretical origin of Susan Haack’s epistemology,this paper probes into the controversial background of Haack’s early western epistemology and the lack of traditional epistemological schemes,and takes Descartes’ s dualism and Peirce’s pragmatism as the theoretical origin as the logical starting point,combined with the development background of modern new pragmatism epistemology,makes a detailed analysis This paper expounds the formation process of Haack’s epistemology from shallow to deep.Secondly,based on Susan Haack’s criticism of the two traditional epistemologies,the basic theory and the coherence theory,this paper systematically discusses the shortcomings of the two theories and the irreconcilable contradictions between the two sides,and specifically analyzes the shortcomings of the epistemological research since the development of the traditional epistemology.Thirdly,in-depth research on Susan Haack’s basic coherence theory has also been conducted.The advantages of basic theory and coherence theory can be combined,and the wrong epistemology can be reformed pragmatically with the goal of exploring truth,which may make the research on epistemology clearer.Finally,from the perspective of axiology,we dig deep into Susan Haack’s epistemology and find that it can reflect its theoretical value by dispelling the fallacy of naturalism epistemology and scientism epistemology,and open up a new road for the development of cognitive philosophy.Combining with the challenges faced by my country’s ideological construction in the new era,borrowing the theory of basic coherence can effectively resist the harm to society caused by individualism,historical nihilism,and universal value theory.
