The French Lieutenant’s Woman is the masterpiece of John Fowles, who is a contemporary British writer. The novel is widely discussed for its many endings and writing techniques, among which the exploration of freedom is intriguing. The heroine,as a mysterious and lonely individual,is criticized for her pursuit of freedom, but her persistence and pursuit of freedom make her practice her own view of happiness. From the perspective of the Eco-feminism,this paper analyzes the social background of Victoria’s period, the current situation of women’s existence and the female image of Sarah in his works, from the oppression, awakening, and fusion of women and nature to express the thought about Eco-feminism of John Fowles finally. That is,to connect the fate and oppression of women with those of nature,to express the desire to save women and nature. The thesis is divided into three parts: the first chapter analyzes the oppression of women and nature from the perspective of Eco-feminism,and analyzes Sarah’s situation.Sarah was oppressed due to her position and gender during this period.Nature is also trampled by man.Man is constantly taking things from nature. The second chapter explores the awakening of women and nature from the perspective of Eco-feminism.Sarah followed her heart and did what she wanted to do.From “the French Lieutenant’s woman” to “Charles’ s lover”,she was alien to Victorian women at that time. She gave her life a meaning of independence. At the same time, nature would retaliate against humans, the emergence of severe weather and the scarcity of resources to the human both ring the alarm bell. The third chapter describes the fusion of women and nature from the perspective of Eco-feminism.The purpose of the Eco-feminism is to liberate women and save nature, and explore the complicated and mysterious relationship between the two by combining women and nature. The French Lieutenant’s Woman also expresses Fowles’ thoughts about Eco-feminism,and his double respect and concern for women and nature.
