Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, one of the representatives of the romantic period in the nineteenth century,is known as the “master of melody”.Based on Russian national music,he ingeniously integrated Western European composition techniques into it,and made Russian music globalized. As we all known,“Dumka”Op.59 is one of his masterpieces of piano music.Motivated by folk music elements, the work is interspersed with Slavic dance elements, showing the world the unique charm and melancholy of the author.Taking ethnic elements as the breakthrough point, this thesis will discusses the work from the aspects of the harmony, mode, melody and rhythm of the work and so on.Combined with my own performance experience, the thesis conducts further research on the work in terms of the method to touch keys, timbre, the application of pedal and performance techniques. The study of this work can deepen the understanding of the work and will be helpful to apply theoretical research to practice.
