Research On The Theses Topics Of Undergraduate Students From Malaysia On Chinese Teacher Training Program

Due to the increasing influence of China,the number of overseas students coming to China to receive academic education is also on the rise.As a key step to obtain a degree,the graduation thesis is of great importance.Therefore,the research on the topic of graduation thesis of overseas students has become a hot topic in the academic research.This paper takes 396 graduation theses of The Malaysian Chinese Teacher Training Program of Beijing Foreign Studies University as the research object,then analyzes and summarizes the characteristics of the selected topics and the influencing factors behind them.This paper also puts forward some suggestions for the writing and guidance of the graduation thesis for the overseas students in the future.In this paper,396 graduation thesis topics are divided into nine categories:cultural studies,Chinese acquisition research,Chinese teaching research,linguistic ontology research,teacher research,Chinese-Foreign translation research,Malaysian Native Chinese teaching research,textbook research and others.It is found that cultural studies topics account for about 36.1%of the total number of papers,which take the largest proportion of these papers.But its proportion has been declining year by year,and accounted for only 7.7%in the latest year.The one the take the second place is Chinese acquisition research.It accounts for 20.2%of the total,which shows a trend of increase in fluctuation,excepting for a significant decline in 2019 and 2021.In the third place,it is the topic of Chinese teaching research,accounting for 13.6%of the total,and its proportion shows an upward trend of fluctuation,with the fastest growth from 2020 to 2021,rising from 18.4%to 42.3%.There is a positive correlation between the proportion of students’ thesis topics and the adjustment of the training program and the change of thesis requirements.This paper analyzes the characteristics of the graduation thesis selection of the students of Malaysian Chinese Language Teacher Training Program.First,the thesis has a wide range of topics,but there are obvious imbalance.Second,the topic selection of the thesis presents obvious characteristics of nationalization.Third,there are many comparative research topics,which reflect students’ cross-cultural consciousness.Forth,Chinese teaching research topics show a rapid rise.It is found that there are serval factors affect the graduation thesis selection of students of Malaysian Chinese Language Teacher Training program.In terms of individual factors,the cultural background and interest of students are the most influential factors,and gender also has a certain influence on the thesis selection.In terms of the influence of supervisors,the direction of students’ thesis topics has a great correlation with the academic background and teaching experience of the supervisors,and has a certain correlation with the personal research direction of the supervisors.In the aspect of school training,students’ thesis topic selection has a direct relationship with the curriculum setting in the training program,especially Chinese knowledge courses and teaching courses.Some students’ thesis topics are also directly related to some non-curriculum links in the training program,such as teaching practice and language practice.On the basis of the above research,this paper puts forward some suggestions for the overseas college students’ graduation thesis guidance and academic writing course teaching.For one thing,they must improve their Chinese level and writing level,then cultivate interest in academic research and pay attention to academic development.For another,the tutor should give specific guidance to the students’ difficulties,strengthen the contact between teachers and students.Finally,the school should strengthen the construction of curriculum system.One is to increase the number of teaching courses and provide more practical opportunities for students.Second,the school should pay attention to the construction of academic paper writing curriculum,enhance the practical teaching content,bring academic norms into the teaching,and establish the academic tutorial system.
