It is a consensus in the field of teaching Chinese as a foreign language that teaching Chinese as a foreign language has always been a painful and difficult point,and its teaching profile is individualized depending on the specific teaching targets and teachers’levels.On the one hand,this paper summarises the problems and difficulties of online Chinese character learning for international students with no basic knowledge of Chinese characters,their lack of basic knowledge of Chinese characters,their single strategy for learning Chinese characters,their weak ability to recognise Chinese characters,and their poor ability to write and read Chinese characters.On the other hand,the challenges and shortcomings of teaching Chinese characters to novice teachers were identified:the low weight of teaching Chinese characters,the single teaching method,and the difficulties in writing Chinese characters online.Based on the problems in both learning and teaching,the author proposes suggestions for novice teachers to teach Chinese characters online for international students at the elementary level,based on the dimensions of respecting students’ learning characteristics,enriching their learning strategies,improving their literacy and teaching skills,and optimising their teaching arrangements,advocating an intuitive and concise approach to teaching Chinese characters.The full text consists of four parts,as follows.Part I is the introduction.It includes the origin of the topic,the significance of the study,the research methodology and the literature review,in which the literature review part gives a brief overview and introduction of the current status of research and research results on teaching Chinese characters to foreigners,and summarises and analyses the highly relevant and important literature from the three perspectives of foreign Chinese character teaching models,foreign Chinese character teaching methods and Chinese character learning situations to support the questionnaire design and related research of this paper.The second part is an analysis of the results of the survey on the online learning and teaching of Chinese characters by international students in non-Chinese cultural circles at the primary level.It consists of three parts:the results of the survey on the online learning of Chinese characters by international students,interviews with novice teachers on the teaching of Chinese characters,and the current situation and problems of Chinese character learning.In the first part,a questionnaire was used to conduct a descriptive statistical analysis of seven aspects,including basic information,language learning background,attitudes and feelings towards learning Chinese characters,Chinese character learning strategies,online Chinese character learning needs,knowledge and mastery of Chinese characters,and evaluation of Chinese character teaching,among 15 international students in Class A of the Further Studies Department.In the second part,interviews were conducted with two novice teachers about their teaching of Chinese characters to find out the weight of teaching Chinese characters,their teaching methods and their feelings about teaching Chinese characters.The third part is about the current situation of online Chinese character learning and the problems of international students.The third part is about suggestions and countermeasures for teaching Chinese characters online.In response to the problems and challenges of international students and novice teachers in Part II,suggestions and countermeasures for online Chinese character teaching are presented in terms of respecting students’ learning characteristics,enriching learning strategies,improving knowledge and competence in teaching Chinese characters,and optimising Chinese character teaching arrangements.The fourth part is the conclusion,which summarises the main ideas of the thesis and points out the shortcomings of the article.
