| As subtitle is a type of audio-visual text,its translation does not merely involve the conversion of verbal mode,and it shall also coordinate relations among different modes.The thesis has adopted a multimodal discourse approach in its analysis of intersemiotic shifts so as to decipher techniques of subtitle translation of National Album from angels of different modes.National Album is one of the excellent microdocumentaries produced by Xinhua News Agency and other mainstream media.The first season was released in 2016,each episode of the season lasts 5 minutes,and National Album now has 5 seasons.The thesis has selected 8 episodes with bilingual subtitles as its target for study,and adopted an analytical model for inter-semiotic shifts which is adjusted on the basis of models proposed respectively by Delabastita and Qian Hong and Feng Dezheng.During the analysis,the thesis finds that there are five major types of inter-semiotic shifts in the subtitle translation of National Album:"Omission+Addition","Omission","Omission+Understatement","Addition",and "Compensation".These five major types are divided into 9 subcategories according to different situations.In the process of intersemiotic shifts,verbal interpretation from Chinese to English may cause loss of meanings due to linguistic and cultural differences.In this case,non-verbal modes help to compensate for the loss,so that the meanings of original subtitles and translated subtitles have reached dynamic equivalence and the loss of publicity effect is prevented.The thesis also found that inter-semiotic shifts happen when conclusive descriptions,historical elements,cinema-graphs and culture-specific elements appear.The subtitle translation of National Album has applied such strategies as omitting redundant information,adding background information and adjusting the register of words to realize verbal transformation. |
