A Translation Report On E-C Translation Of News Commentary From The Perspective Of Toury’s Translation Norms

This report is based on the translator’s internship in the Center for South Asia Study,Academy of Area Studies,Sichuan Normal University,from March to June 2021.The translation materials are eight passages written by Pratap Banu Mehta,a columnist for the Indian Express.The translation text involves four topics,namely Covid-19 vaccine policies,an agricultural bill,India’s democracy and religious faith.This report reviewed the problems and solutions in the process of translation practice and summarized the achievements and deficiencies of this translation practice.Under Toury’s translation norms theory,this translation practice report selected twenty-six cases to analyze from three aspects,namely preliminary norms,initial norms and operational norms.Firstly,the author conformed to the preliminary norms,selecting eight passages of news commentary from the India Express as the translation material.As a result,the translation materials are worth studying.Secondly,the author chose the acceptability of the target text as the translation criteria according to initial norms to ensure that the target text caters for the reading habits of the target language.Finally,the author adopted translation strategies such as addition,omission,annotation,part of speech conversion and voice change in actual translation practice based on operational norms to realize the objectives of conveying the correct information of the source text and enjoying high readability.The author found that in the process of the case study,the quality of the translator’s translated text has been improved,which shows that Toury’s translation norms theory plays a guiding role in the writing of news translation practice reports and can help improve the quality of the translation.Through the translation practice,the author realized that translators should have the following qualities to do a good translation.First,translators should be capable of searching information efficiently,finding and verifying the confusing information in the source text.Second,translators need to have good writing skills to convey the information of the source text in the target language.Finally,translators should revise the target text in various ways to guarantee the quality of the target text.The purposes of this report are to summarize the author’s study during the period of postgraduate and to provide some ideas for future translation practice reports of similar texts.
