Since the birth of dynamic images at the end of the 19 th century,the intrusion of cameras has broken the tranquility of real time and space."The original face of lives" has been copied as "moving pictures" and pasted to different places across physical time and space for people from different societies,cultures,and economies,and was gazed by strangers with different identities and experiences.The eye of camera extends the ability of sight of human,and constructs a gaze relationship of "seeing and being seen" across time and space through the encoding of present and absent images,and continue to the present day.Recording as the original function of the camera,documentary as the original form of moving images,are always entangled in the dispute between objective representation and subjective performance.Documentary pioneers such as Robert Flaherty,Dziga Vertov,and John Grierson,Direct Cinema,Cinéma vérité and New documentary movement continue to study documentary creation concepts from different perspectives,trying to expand and demonstrate the true boundaries and presentation forms of documentaries.As the important object of documentary,character documentary is gradually separated from many documentary types to form an independent documentary branch.In the new era and historical context,the changes of rural people’s life world,daily habits and spiritual field are also worthy of attention.This paper explored and analyzed the creative concept and creative path of the rural character documentary,and then reflect on the creative process,combining the creative practice of the documentary "Medium",based on presence,absence,and gaze as the theoretical basis,through the research integration method,case study method,and interdisciplinary research method.In terms of recording and authenticity,reappearance and expression,construction and acceptance,try to support the theme and form of the documentary named "Media" with theories and academic discussion,in order to improve new thinking for the practical creation of character documentaries.This paper is divided into five parts: in the introduction,it mainly introduced the research background and significance of this topic,overseas and domestic research status of documentaries,and the relevant theories involved,to be the basis of the following discussion.In the first chapter,discussed the creative concept of the documentary of rural people from the theoretical perspective of presence,and made a more in-depth analysis of the record and reality of the camera and the creator’s fragmentary intrusion into the life world of the subject.In the second chapter,discussed the nature of reappearance and expression path of image language in the creation of rural documentaries from the perspective of gaze theory.In the third chapter,discussed and reflected on the practical problems in the later editing of the rural character documentary from the theoretical perspective of absence.In the conclusion,summarized the results of the previous discussion,and proposes the practical and theoretical significance of continuing to answer the question "What is documentary?"...
