English class promotes students to learn English knowledge, master basic skills and promote the all-around development of various abilities.Numerous studies have shown that students’ participation in class has a significant impact on students’ overall development. The Outline of Fundamental Education Curriculum Reform, which was Formulated by the Ministry of Education of China, highlights that attention should be given to the class participation of students so that they can play the main role in the teaching of curriculums. Most lessons begin from the lead-in and students’ participation in the lead-in of a class plays a decisive role of the effectiveness of their learnings. Therefore,it is important for educators to study the current situation of class participation, the influencing factors and the corresponding strategies.Taking a Tianjin middle school as an example, this study investigated the current situation of class participation of students in Grade 3 as well as the factors affecting class participation and corresponding strategies through classroom observation, questionnaires and interviews. This paper starts with the following research questions :(1)what is the current situation of junior high school students’ participation in lead-in of English classes?(2)what are the factors affecting the middle school students’ participation in the lead-in of English classes? The study finds that the level of students’ participation had certain room for improvement.Their behavioral participation is good and nearly 50% of the students were consistently able to maintain high behavioral participation. But their emotional participation and cognitive participation were generally poor.Only about 35% of the students were able to achieve high cognitive participation, and only 10% were able to maintain high emotional participation. The factors that affect student participation include three parts—teachers’ factors, students’ own factors and other factors. The teachers’ factors include teachers’ attention, teachers’ feedback, class design, teaching methods and teachers’ mental state; The students’ own factors include students’ learning interests, prior knowledge and students’ preference for teachers;Other factors include the complexity of knowledge, classroom atmosphere and interaction between teachers. Then, this paper puts forward several teaching suggestions to improve students’ participation in the lead-in of English classes based on the status quo and influencing factors studies.By analyzing the situation of students’ participation and the influencing factors, this paper provides significant guidance to educators and enables junior high school English teachers to gain a better understanding of the existing problems related to students’ participation, helping them to improve the quality and effectiveness of English teaching.
