| In the context of internationalization, speakers often use English to give speeches in lectures or academic exchanges. However, this is difficult for non-native English learners. The speaker’s speech is short and will not be repeated over and over again, and the language of the speech is a foreign language. So,it is difficult for students to understand the content of the speech. This will cause the learners to become anxious, bring them a heavy cognitive load, reduce their interest in learning, and fail to understand the content of the speech. At present, the studies related to speech-enabled language translation(SELT)are mainly focused on online learning, and there are few studies on using SELT technology in a real face-to-face classroom. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to explore the feasibility of using SELT texts to support students’ learning during lectures in English in a real classroom. This study analyzed the effects of SELT texts on learning performance in three lectures with different content compared with the other two interventions, namely no text and speech-to-text recognition(STR)texts. In addition, this study further explored the influence of different English proficiency and different lecture content on the use of SELT texts. In this study, students’ learning performance included students’ post-test scores and student discussion.Secondly, this study also explored the students’ perception of STR texts and SELT texts.Sixty graduate students who participated in the study were divided into three groups, namely control group 1,control group 2,and experimental group. The students in the control group 1 did not have any text support;the control group 2 had the support of speech-to-text recognition(STR)texts;the experimental group had the support of speech-enabled language translation(SELT)texts.Three groups of students participated in three lectures in English.Students completed the peer discussion,post-test,and perception questionnaire at the end of each lecture. The results showed that in terms of post-test scores, students with SELT texts support had significantly higher post-test scores in the three lectures than those without text support and STR texts support.SELT texts helped students solve the problems of language comprehension, enabling them to focus more on content learning. This study further analyzed the post-test scores of students with different English abilities. The results showed that for students with high English ability and low English ability, the post-test scores of students with SELT texts support were significantly higher than that of students without text support in the three lectures.SELT texts and STR texts presented different differences in the three lectures. The possible reason was that students’ familiarity with the use of the texts, students’ English ability and the difficulty and length of lectures affected the effect of SELT texts and STR texts on post-test scores.Secondly, the SELT texts had a positive effect on the discussion. In terms of questioning, the results showed that both the SELT texts and the STR texts promoted students to ask questions in the discussion in different ways.SELT texts enabled students to ask more detail-related questions and ask fewer questions about vocabulary and phrases. In terms of question answering, the SELT texts promoted students to solve questions in the discussion, and the questions solved were more related to the content itself and details.SELT texts promoted students’ questioning and promote students to solve these questions. Finally, the results of the TAM and satisfaction questionnaire showed that students basically thought that the SELT texts were useful and satisfactory and were basically willing to use it in the future. Therefore, this study suggests that providing students with SELT texts is a feasible and useful way to facilitate students’ understanding when learning lectures in foreign languages.SELT texts enabled students to obtain higher learning scores and promote their discussion, helping students to perform better in class. In addition,in order to use SELT texts effectively, teachers and students need to be familiar with and master some methods and strategies for using SELT texts in advance. |
