The business English reading course is an essential course for business English major and business-related majors in the secondary vocational school.The improvement of reading ability is the basis for improving students’ self-learning ability and application ability,and it is also a key factor affecting the final learning outcome.The efficient reading ability could not only enable students to pass all kinds of exams during the students period,but also assist the students in their career,make them have the ability to deal with all kinds of documents and materials in work effectively and efficiently,so as to achieve the aim of cultivating practical English talents for vocational education.It’s challenging to help students improve their reading ability,so it’s necessary to explore an effective method to raise students’ learning interest and improve their reading ability.The Production-Oriented Approach is a theory proposed by professor Wen Qiufang which has a good effect on teaching English.With the Chinese characteristics,professor Wen Qiufang combines the actual situation of students to get the results.The present practical study aims to conduct an experimental one applying POA in business English reading in a secondary vocational school.With the theory applied to the research,we could solve the research questions in specific situations.Based on the relevant theory of POA-based teaching method,the author applied it to the teaching of business English reading to explore the following:1.What is the effect of POA on students’ reading ability after using the POA-based teaching method on business English reading teaching?2.What are the changes in reading motivation of the students after using the POA-based teaching method on business English reading teaching?Two second-grade classes with similar English reading level in a secondary vocational school in Jiangmen city,Guangdong province were selected as subjects for the comparative teaching experiment.The study sample is called EC,which is based on the teaching method of POA,while the control class(CC)is based on the traditional ways.This study combines the research methods,which are qualitative and quantitative,to analyze the test result and then find the conclusions.According to the experimental results,the findings are:1.POA teaching method is effective in improving the students’ reading level.Various activities are effective to involve students in the reading process and help them deal with tasks creatively rather than understand the texts mechanically.2.Students’ learning initiative and presentation skills have been improved.Besides,their interest in learning has been stimulated.Their ability to respond quickly and cooperate with others has been improved,resulting in a significant improvement in test scores.Students’ learning motivation has been elevated.However,due to the different objectives and the author’s ability,there are also some problems in this paper.This issue needs to be further studied later to solve the problems in teaching practice.It is hoped that more teachers could constantly implement in the research of such topics,contributing to improving the application of POA methods in business English reading classes.
