The Song Dynasty was the golden age for the development of flower-and-bird painting, which not only benefited from economic prosperity and the development of Neo-Confucianism,but also related to the preferences of the rulers and the love of flowers by the whole people. The "Four Seasons" theme flower and bird paintings are an important part of the Song Dynasty flower and bird paintings.Since its birth,flowerand-bird paintings have potentially contained the meaning of "four seasons".Because each flower blooms in different seasons. For example, lotus flowers bloom in the hot summer,so it represents summer time;chrysanthemum blooms in bleak autumn,so it represents autumn time. The painter’s strong subjective consciousness of expressing the "Four Seasons" began in the Song Dynasty.Even the state of flowers at different times in a day was captured and painted by the artist.Since "Xu Huang Ali",flower and bird painting gradually formed the style of courtyard painting and literati painting.Different painting concepts have caused differences in the understanding of the "Four Seasons" and the way the pictures are presented. The way that courtyard painters express flower and bird paintings is more embodied in respecting and reproducing the law of the "Four Seasons".The literati painters who advertised "morale" and "especiality" believed that objective laws such as "four seasons" could give way to the expression of personal "spirituality" in the pictures. The specific manifestation is a breakthrough in the concept of "Four Seasons",that is,the breaking and reconstruction of the temporal and spatial relationship of the picture. The exploration of the concept of time and space in the picture is still a hot topic in the flower-and-bird painting world today. The contemporary era is a highly inclusive era.The combination of new techniques and new concepts with traditional themes is bound to inject more vitality into the "Four Seasons" theme flower and bird paintings and make them more contemporary.
