As a famous translator,writer,critic and editor in the history of Chinese modern and contemporary literature,Mao Dun has created a large number of prefaces and postscripts in his literary career for more than 60 years.These prefaces and postscripts are rich in content and diverse in forms,which are not only a testimony of his literary activities,but also a reflection of his thought changes in different periods.As an important part of the paratext,prefaces and postscripts have an important explanatory effect on the text.Therefore,the paper takes Mao Dun’s preface and postscript as the research object.First,the paper sorts out Mao Dun’s preface and postscript,summarize the author’s literary concept,and explore the intertextual relationship between Mao Dun’s preface and the text to discover the characteristics and value of Mao Dun’s preface and postscript.The introduction of this paper,through the comparison of ancient and modern prefaces and postscripts,explains the shortcomings of prefaces and postscripts in the study of modern and contemporary literature;through the comparison between the current study of Mao Dun and the study of Mao Dun’s preface and postscript,finds the shortcomings of the study of Mao Dun’s preface and postscript,and emphasizes the necessity of the study of Mao Dun’s preface and postscript.The first chapter classifies Mao Dun’s preface and postscript.According to the different objects of Mao Dun’s writing,they are divided into four categories,including prefaces and postscripts written for his translation,his creation,other people’s works,and the periodicals.The main contents of various prefaces and postscripts are introduced,which lays the foundation for the following research.The second chapter excavates the literary concepts contained in Mao Dun’s various prefaces and postscripts.This chapter is composed of five parts: unique translation view,open editing view,rigorous creation view,serious criticism view and rational reader view.The third chapter explores the intertextual relationship between Mao Dun’s prefaces and the text.It selects representative articles from Mao Dun’s preface and postscript to analyze the importance of prefaces and postscripts in defending the text of intent.It also explores the gap between the prefaces and the text,the misreading of the text by prefaces and postscripts.The fourth chapter summarizes the characteristics and value of Mao Dun’s preface and postscript.The characteristics of Mao Dun’s preface and postscript are mainly manifested in three aspects: the one-to-many relationship between the text and prefaces,the diverse and narrative forms of inscriptions,etc.Mao Dun’s preface and postscript have important historical value.They are a testimony of Mao Dun’s life experience,thought changes,friendship,and changes in the version of his works.His wonderful expositions on novels,proses,and dramas in prefaces and postscripts also have important theoretical value.They have guiding significance for literary creation and research.In short,Mao Dun’s preface and postscript is not only a mirror reflecting Mao Dun’s life,but also a bridge to his literary world.Studying Mao Dun’s preface and postscript can broaden the horizons of researchers and provide some new ideas for the study of Mao Dun.
