A Report On The Translation Of A Medic’s Guide To Essential Legal Matters (Chapters 2,9 And 10)

This report is based on the translation of Chapters 2,9 and 10 of A Medic’s Guide to Essential Legal Matters,a book edited by British medical law scholars,Jane Sturgess,Derek Duane and Rebekah Ley.The book covers some of the frequently discussed legal issues of British medical professionals and provides a practical guide for the medical staff in handling them.So far,there is no published Chinese version of the book.The translation report consists of five parts: task description,process description,theoretical framework,case study and summary.In view of the characteristics of the source text,the translator mainly takes Hans J.Vermeer’s Skopos theory as a guiding theory for the translation task.With its guidance,some of the difficulties encountered in this task are discussed in detail,and possible solutions are also proposed.At lexical level,the translator focuses on the translation of technical terms,including monosemous terms and polysemous terms.At syntactic level,the translator discusses the translation of nominal structures and passivity phenomenon;as for nominal structures,including nominal phrases and nominal clauses,the translator summarizes some commonly used translation techniques;in the translation of passive voice,the translator mainly adopts two strategies,which are retaining passive voice and turning passive voice into active voice.At textual level,the translator pays attention to the adjustment of the format,discussing the function of annotation and clear layout.This translation report may provide some references and assistance for translators who are going to translate such academic legal texts in the future.The translator benefits a lot from the translation task,but there are still some limitations of the report.Further accumulation of knowledge and translation experience may enable the translator to handle some temporarily neglected issues in future practices.
