In recent years, the research of positive psychology has been paid more and more attention, and more and more studies have been done on self-forgiveness.Current research shows that self-forgiveness can help people better accept themselves, reduce negative emotions, and move on from life events faster.Teenagers are in a period of rapid development and change in physiology, psychology and thought. They are prone to emotional distress or even psychological problems due to the difficulty in self-forgiveness after making mistakes. Therefore, the study of self-forgiveness is of great significance to the mental health of adolescents. This study used the Adolescent Forgiveness Tendency Questionnaire,Emotion Management Scale and Mental Health Test to investigate the status of self-forgiveness among 970 adolescents, and to explore the relationship between self-forgiveness,emotion management and mental health.Under the condition that the overall level of forgiveness was low,we developed a group program for self-forgiveness by integrating activities related to cognition and emotion on the basis of Worthington’s REACH forgiveness intervention model, and conducted 8 sessions of group counseling intervention that lasted for 2months on 13 adolescents to improve the level of self-forgiveness,promote the development of adolescents’ mental health. The main conclusions of this study are as follows:(1)Adolescents have a low level of self-forgiveness and are more inclined to punish themselves rather than forgive themselves after doing something wrong. The self-forgiveness level of male students is higher than that of female students. The self-forgiveness level of teenagers in different areas has significant difference, which is shown as: City > town > rural areas. And there is no significant difference in the level of self-forgiveness in different grades and whether they are the only child.(2)Adolescents’ emotional management ability is at a medium level. The emotional management ability level: boys>girls,cities>towns,singleton>non-singleton.There is no significant difference of emotional management level in different grades.(3)Mental health status of adolescents is generally good, but 6.42% of adolescents have mental health problems.Among mental health problems, the incidence rates of learning anxiety, physical symptoms, allergy tendency,self-accusation tendency and anxiety towards people are 63.90%,28.24%,26.80%,20.82%,and 11.41% respectively, and learning anxiety is common among teenagers.(4)Self-forgiveness has a significant positive correlation with mental health and all the sub-dimensions.There is a significant positive correlation between self-forgiveness and mental health, and a significant negative correlation between self-punishment and mental health.Emotion management is positively correlated with self-forgiveness and forgiving oneself, and negatively correlated with self-punishment.Emotion management is positively correlated with mental health.Adolescents’ self-forgiveness can predict their mental health to a certain extent.(5)Adolescent emotion management ability plays a mediating role between self-forgiveness and mental health, and the mediating effect size is-0.196.The mediating effect of emotion management is 0.223.(6)The self-made group counseling program of self-forgiveness can effectively improve the level of self-forgiveness of adolescents, and the effect can be sustained for a period of time, and can be used in the process of school forgiveness education. The present study focuses on self-forgiveness,which is generally neglected in the field of forgiveness, and the previous research on self-forgiveness are mostly reviews. Therefore, this study can not only expand the research on the relationship of self-forgiveness with other variables in theory, but also provide empirical guidance for group intervention in self-forgiveness.There is a long way to go for the mental health development of adolescents. The researchers hope to promote the healthy growth and development of adolescents in China with this meager effort.
