| As a significant part of English teaching,English reading is an important way to cultivate students’ English core competence. At present, there is a widespread phenomenon in English reading class that teachers play a dominant role and students listen passively. For a long time,it will not only lead to the decline of students’ interest in reading class, but also the failure of improving students’ reading ability. Therefore, exploration of efficient reading teaching methods has become a hot topic in English teaching.Guidelines for the Evaluation of School-running Quality of Regular Senior Secondary Schools(2021 version)encourages teachers to actively study and apply excellent teaching achievements and information-based teaching resources, improve and innovate education and teaching methods, pay attention to heuristic, interactive and inquiry-based teaching, strengthen interdisciplinary comprehensive teaching, promote the deep integration of information technology and education & teaching,as well as promote students’ independent, cooperative and inquiry learning. The Project-based Learning approach can meet these requirements and make up for the defects in the regular reading teaching. The Project-based Learning approach means that under the encouragement and inspiration of teachers, students take group cooperation as the way of learning and complete the project by hand as the learning goal.In this process, the role of students has changed from traditional passive learning to active exploration and acquisition of knowledge. This approach gives full play to students of creativity and imagination and finally improve students’ comprehensive ability to solve problems. In recent years, although the Project-based Learning approach has been widely used in some subject teaching fields,it is seldom adopted in the English reading class in senior secondary school. Therefore, this study focuses on the application of the Project-based Learning approach in the English reading class in senior secondary school, with two research questions being put forward:1.Can the Project-based Learning approach improve students’ English reading scores?2.What impact will the Project-based Learning approach have on students’ interest in English reading contrasted with the regular teaching method? In this study, students from two parallel classes in the first grade of a senior high school in K city are taken as the research subjects, with 50 students from the experimental class and 50 students from the control class,a total of 100 students, and a 16-week teaching experiment is carried out.A reading proficiency test and a questionnaire survey of reading interest are conducted in the two classes before and after the experiment respectively, and after the experiment, the students at different levels of the experimental class are interviewed. All the data collected before and after the experiment are compared and analyzed by SPSS 24.0 software. The results show that, compared with the control class, the Sig value of paired sample T-test of reading test scores before and after the experimental class is 0.000<0.05,showing a significant difference, indicating that the Project-based Learning approach can improve students’ English reading scores. In addition, through questionnaires and interviews,it can be found that the Project-based Learning approach stimulates students’ interest in reading and is deeply loved by students. The author hopes that through this exploration, the classroom efficiency of the high school English reading course can be improved and beneficial thinking can be brought to the English educators. |
