| Autonomous learning is not only a learning attitude but also a learning ability. The process of autonomous learning is the process in which learners independently establish the learning motivation, environment, method, time, results and process. The cultivation of this ability is particularly important in today’s era and it has an irreplaceable value in any education system. The classroom is a place where teachers and students can learn together and talk with each other. The classroom environment generally includes the physical environment and the psychosocial environment. The research at home and abroad mostly focus on the latter, which refers to the social elements composed of the social relationship between teachers and students and their interaction behavior, mainly including teacher support, student affinity, student cooperation, task orientation and class order. For a long time, scholars at home and abroad have paid close attention to the relationship between some subjective factors and students’ autonomous learning ability, while there are few studies on the relationship between some objective factors and autonomous learning ability. This study aims to explore the relationship between high school students’ classroom environment perception and their English autonomous learning ability from the perspective of the classroom environment. The data of this study are from questionnaires and interviews to explore the relationship between the senior high school students’ English autonomous learning ability and their perception of the classroom environment.Through the questionnaire survey of 302 senior high school students in NO.101 Middle School in Urumqi and the semi-structured interview with six of them, the following conclusions are as follows.Firstly, most senior high school students’ English autonomous learning ability is in good condition but there are still deficiencies in the allocation of learning time. The reasons are analyzed as follows. On the one hand, teachers formulate students’ learning time plan strictly so that students can not manage their learning time independently. On the other hand, due to some external temptations and the pressure of various learning tasks in the school, many high school students will delay the implementation of their plans.Secondly, high school students have a good perception of the classroom environment and have the best perception of the class order dimension. The main reasons are as follows. On the one hand, most classes formulate some class orders and require students to follow them.On the other hand, students are more willing to obey these orders if the teacher takes students’ opinions into consideration during the process of making the class order.Thirdly, there is a significant positive correlation between these key concepts. The result of multiple linear regression analysis indicated that among the dimensions of senior high school students’ classroom perception, the regression coefficients of task orientation, students’ cooperation, teachers’ support and students’ affinity on senior high school students’ English autonomous learning ability are positive but only the regression coefficient of class order is negative which shows that the better students’ perception of class order, the worse their English autonomous learning ability. The reason is that teachers should pay attention to the rationality of class order and the needs of students. On the one hand,a reasonable class order can create a good environment for students’ learning and improve the formulation of students’ autonomous learning ability in English subject. On the other hand, students have their own unique learning habits and styles.Too strict class order will hinder the development of students’ autonomous learning abilities. In order to better foster students’ English autonomous learning ability, the author proposes the following suggestions: First and foremost, implement task-based teaching and reinforce students’ comprehension and operation of learning tasks.Secondly, the teacher should pay attention to cooperative learning, improve students’ initiative and participation in group activities.Thirdly, the teacher should care for students and actively create a harmonious and intimate relationship between teachers and students.Last but not least, teachers should manage the class order and strive to build an orderly and flexible class order. |
