A Study On Carl Sandburg’s Communication And Influence In China

Carl Sandburg was one of the most influential poets in the United States after Whitman,who has been translated and studied in China for more than one hundred years.Although not only were Sandburg’ s poems selected and translated,but also he was shaped according to the needs of the times and aesthetic changes in different periods of time in China,in general,the Creative Treason of culture is still carried out around the three approaches of imagist poets,city poets and people poets.Looking closely at both Sandburg in different times and the translation strategies of different translators,we can not only see the ideological style of different times,but also confirm Sandburg’ s acceptance in China and his influence on Chinese poets.The development of Chinese new poetry is closely related to foreign poetry.As the source of influence,the impact of Sandburg and other foreign poets on new poetry is not only formal and external,but also connotative and qualified.Sandburg’ s criticism of cities and machinery industry,the revelation of evil capital and the compassion for the people living in it can be seen in the poems of Tang Qi,Lv Yuan and Zou Difan.Sandburg’ s unconventional colloquial creation is also presented in their poems.This kind of presentation has been merely localized or in Chinese style.Sandburg’ s poems,together with his image,have been internalized into a part of Chinese new poetry.The thesis is divided into five parts.In the first part,through the introduction of domestic translators’ translations in different periods and the objective comparison of different versions,it analyzes how different translators use different translation strategies to carry out creative treason in the process of translation.The second part uses Lefevere’ s theory of Cultural Turn to analyze China’ s evaluation criteria on his poems,also the ideology and aesthetic factors,discussing the translator’s translation attitude and choices,as well as the construction of Sandburg’s image.In the last three parts,based on the sampling comparison of poetic images,themes and styles of Tang Qi,Lv Yuan and Zou Difan,it demonstrates the influence of Sandburg on Chinese new poets.
