Richard Yates,a contemporary American novelist, focuses on the United States from the 1950 s to the mid-1980 s.He has created seven novels and two collections of short stories. These works focus on the lonely and helpless living conditions and mental states of ordinary people trapped in various life crises.Through the plain narration of the novel,Yates not only outlines the original life of ordinary people in the middle and lower classes of society, but also points to the potential social crisis of American society in this period.Taking Yates’ lonely writing as the topic, this paper analyzes the core characteristics and artistic value of Yates’ creation from three aspects: the image of the lonely, the spatial landscape and physical image of the lonely, and the cultural motivation behind the lonely writing. This paper is divided into three parts. The general contents of each part are as follows:The introduction is the first chapter, which combs the research status of Yates and his works at home and abroad, and explains the development of Yates research by classifying and summarizing the research literature at home and abroad. The main body is divided into three chapters, focusing on the diversified presentation of the theme of loneliness in Yates’ s works. The main contents are as follows:The second chapter "image representation of lonely writing" classifies and discusses the lonely images in the works such as eleven kinds of loneliness, natural girls and young heart crying, analyzes the living conditions and mental states of these characters from the two aspects of female image series and male image series, and points out that the reason for their loneliness is not only a simple life crisis, but also a spiritual lack of refuge. The third chapter "metaphorical representation of lonely writing" analyzes the spatial landscape and its implied meaning in Yates’ s works, focusing on the three aspects of breeding the lonely field, integrating the lonely image and the life direction of lonely writing, and points out that the original hospital for curing diseases has become a cage of life, and death has become the inevitable fate of those lonely people,The seemingly indifferent description implies Yates’ grief and compassion for the loss of life. The fourth chapter "the Enlightenment of lonely writing" analyzes the cultural motivation of Yates’ s multi-dimensional writing of loneliness by taking the works such as revolutionary road and natural girl as the research object. On the one hand, the social and cultural turbulence in the United States after the cold war is the external reason for Yates’ s persistence in lonely writing; On the other hand,Yates integrates the feeling of the external world into the deep thinking of the meaning of life existence,so as to seek the possibility of overcoming the plight of real survival, which has become the spiritual driving force of Yates’ s lonely writing. The conclusion summarizes the main points of the paper, and briefly explains the creative motivation and significance of Yates’ s lonely writing. From the perspective of creative motivation, loneliness has always been Richard Yates’ most profound emotional experience and has been accompanied by his life and writing. Therefore, lonely writing has become the main theme of Yates’ novels. From the perspective of creative significance,Yates’ s lonely description of many frustrated people reflects his artistic reflection and conscious reflection on the reality of being in a crisis state due to the loss of his spiritual home in the rich material age of the United States.
