Chinese traditional patterns have been shining brightly in the long river of history. They are not only the witnesses of history, but also the inheritors of culture. They record the living habits and aesthetic preferences of people in different periods, and even reflect the development track of an era.Butterfly patterns are widely used in Chinese traditional patterns. It originates from people’s appreciation and awe of nature and is the condensation and sustenance of good wishes. The butterfly pattern appeared in the Sui and Tang Dynasties, prevailed in the Song Dynasty and reached its peak in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It has various forms of expression and profound cultural connotation.Butterfly patterns contain high artistic and cultural values, but there are few studies on butterfly patterns at home and abroad. In recent years,as Chinese people attach great importance to traditional culture, inheriting and developing the formal beauty and connotative beauty of traditional butterfly patterns, and using modern design thinking to integrate and activate them with contemporary products,is a subject worthy of in-depth research. This thesis takes the traditional butterfly pattern as the main research object.Firstly, through the literature survey method, this thesis summarizes and analyzes the research status at home and abroad, combined with a large number of retrieval materials and field research materials of the museum, and traces the origin and evolution of the butterfly pattern. This thesis focuses on combing the butterfly patterns in the Tang, song,Ming and Qing Dynasties, and analyzes the presentation form and development of butterfly patterns in each stage in combination with the era background, economic prosperity and decline, social environment, consciousness and concept,as well as the carrier legends of porcelain, fabric and jewelry with butterfly patterns.Secondly, find a large number of cases from literary works, folklore, art works, arts and crafts to analyze and summarize the cultural connotation of butterflies, which can be divided into four categories: "love symbol","freedom sustenance","longevity vision" and "totem worship".For the analysis of the aesthetic expression of butterfly pattern,it mainly starts from three angles: external modeling, internal decoration and overall composition, and makes a specific description of each angle in combination with the legend. Finally, based on the above research on the shape and meaning of traditional butterfly patterns,it is proposed that butterfly patterns can be integrated and applied with modern design from the two levels of "image perception level" and "image perception level".This thesis analyzes the existing application cases of butterfly patterns in contemporary times, summarizes their application methods as "selective direct application" and "creative indirect application",further puts forward four innovative methods of butterfly patterns in modern design, namely "simplified generalization method","exaggerated deformation method","association addition method" and "combination arrangement method",and verifies the feasibility of the above methods through the design practice of different themes. The process of exploring butterfly patterns is not only a new discovery of traditional decorative patterns, but also a new pursuit of the spirit of Chinese traditional culture.Exploring the continuity of the shape and meaning elements of butterfly patterns in modern design can provide new ideas for the rejuvenation of traditional patterns in contemporary times, and then make both traditional patterns and modern design achieve a win-win situation.
