The 21st century is an era of rapid scientific and technological development and the links between countries are becoming ever closer. Many local museums have become showcases for Chinese culture and the demand for escort interpreters is increasing.Information helps to complete interpretation. And the ability of avoiding information loss is one of the important criteria for being a successful interpreter. The aim of this report is to study the problem of information deficiency arising from the author’s work as an escort interpreter at the Yangzhou Museum and to further investigate the application of the Interpretation Theory in interpretation practice.Interpretation Theory holds that an interpreter should not pursue the equivalence of linguistic units, but should focus on the equivalence in the meaning of the original text.In addition, the Interpretation Theory proposes a triangular model of interpretation, namely comprehension, deverbalization, reformulation.Interpretation Theory suggests that an interpreter should grasp the central idea of the speaker according to the context so as to convey the speaker’s ideas to the target audience. The Interpretation Theory can effectively guide an interpreter in dealing with such language features as culturally-loaded words and colloquialisms, which can be found everywhere in the Yangzhou Museum. On October 15th,2021,the author worked as a guide interpreter for a South African friend at the Yangzhou Museum. The report starts with a brief introduction to the whole task. Then, the author details the Interpretation Theory and then reviews, analyses and summarizes interpretation practice through case studies, pointing out the causes of information loss.In view of the triangular model of the Interpretive Theory, the author proposes solutions such as“guessing”“amplification”and“paraphrase”to solve it.It is hoped that the analysis of this paper can provide some references for others in the field of escort interpreting and make contributions to promoting cross-cultural communication.
