A Study On The Composition Technique Of Schwantner’s Morning’s Embrace

Joseph Schwantner（1943.3-）is an American contemporary composer,one of the representatives of the new Romanticism,whose early works were influenced by sequential music,and then gradually changed to "eclectic" music style.He composed,performed and published many works,including 18 works for orchestra,7 works for wind orchestra and 13 works for chamber music.These works have been performed all over the world and have made him more and more famous in the field of contemporary music creation.The symphony in question,Morning’s Embrace,was commissioned by the Washington National Orchestra in 2005 to celebrate its 75 th anniversary.The work highlights schwandner’s creation characteristics influenced by minimalism after the1980 s.The music materials are refined,the rhythm and melody patterns are often repeated,and the percussion is more prominent,but the orchestral color and strong drama are still the most important factors in the work.Schwantner use of composing technology and world music trend at that time all have different degrees of contact,Morning’s Embrace director of the music language,is the pursuit of modern avant-garde music style,and have a romantic tradition background,reflect the characteristics of the new romanticism,at the same time,impartiality,both supplement each other to complete the expression of music,eclecticism characteristics show no doubt.The thesis consists of six parts.Introduction,the purpose and significance of the topic;The first chapter,schwandner’s life,creation process and the introduction of Morning’s Embrace;Chapter two and Chapter three explore the writing techniques and style characteristics of Morning’s Embrace,including musical structure,Theme and its development,tonality and harmony,rhythm and tempo,texture characteristics,etc.Chapter four,the practice of music creation,explains how to use Schwandner’s creative techniques in music creation practice,embodies the style of Morning’s Embrace;Conclusion,highlight the expression of the concept of music creation,techniques of understanding,and how to use techniques in creative practice.
