This report is based on a mock interpreting practice for an English course at Beijing Foreign Studies University given by professor John.G.Blair concerning the comparisons between western and Chinese modern families in aspects of family value,marriage value,love value,and parenting.The source language material spans 1 hour,and the delivery time length of interpreting lasts 1 hour and 13 minutes.In the E-C consecutive interpreting practice,the author encounters problems of deviation from the source language in the output of the interpretation.In this report,the author finds out that these problems are semantic deviations located in the four-word lexical chunks of the sentence rather than the sentence as a whole.The semantic deviations from the source language are manifested in three types of problems,misinterpretation,omission,and redundancy.These three problems are found in three types of four-word lexical chunks.The three types of four-word lexical chunks are third-person subject with verb phrase lexical chunks,noun phrase with of-phrase lexical chunks,and verb phrase with non-passive verb lexical chunks.The theory of lexical chunks provides guidance for this interpreting practice report.The author puts forth three tactics for coping with these problems mentioned previously,considering the characteristics of lexical chunks.The three coping tactics are amplification,integration,and reduction.This report introduces three types of four-word lexical chunks with interpretation problems in the mock interpreting practice,analyzes three interpretation problems of the above categories,and proposes their coping strategies.The author hopes that the study on the problems of the output of the four-word lexical chunks and their coping tactics in consecutive interpreting can provide elaboration for interpreters’ future training and practice.
