| Wenxin Diaolong is the treasure of literary theory works in China.Liu Xie used his superb ancient writing style to write this methodology book for readers, including general theory, stylistic theory, creative theory and literary criticism. The English translation of Chinese classics can be traced back to the 18 th century.A large number of Chinese classical literary works have been translated into English, which has expanded the breadth and influence of Chinese cultural communication and publicity. In the process of English translation of classics,in that translator endeavours to explain the original meaning of classics, the target language readers can know the meaning of the original work well.In the process of English translation, the translator should not only clarify the sentence structure and language cohesion in the classics to the readers, but also add content to explain the implied information of the classics.Explicitation is a unique phenomenon in translation.Explicitation was first put forward by French scholars Vinay and Darbelnet in 1958.After that,Klaudy proposed four types, which is a supplement to explicitation of Vinay and Darbelnet.A key problem involved is how the information implied in the original text can be possible to be expressed by the translator. This thesis tries to put forward some research questions based on the section translation of the English translation of Wenxin Diaolong by Stephen Owen and Yang Guobin: What kind of theoretical basis is the English translation of Wenxin Diaolong based on? If Klaudy’s obligatory explicitation, selective explicitation, pragmatic explicitation and translation-inherent explicitation appear in the translation of Wenxin Diaolong based on,what are the skills to realize these four interpretations? What are the reasons behind the English translation of Wenxin Diaolong? From lexical, syntactic and cultural level, through text analysis and qualitative analysis, this paper discusses the embodiment of explicit means in the English translation of classics and excavates the motivation behind it.Through looking up the translation and original version, the lexical, syntactic and cultural level will make the translation more understandable due to explicitation. The lexical level focuses on the translation of core categories; The explicitation of cultural level is mainly reflected in characters and idioms, because there is a big gap between foreign and Chinese cultural background;the syntactic level is reflected in the addition of logical subjects and logical connectives. In conclusion, the target language readers can understand the text more easily, which is more conducive to disseminate Chinese culture overseas. |
