General Senior High School Curriculum Standards(2017 edition2020 revision)puts forward the activity-based approach to English learning which is aimed at cultivating students’ English subject core competencies.Learning activities,viewed as the basic way of English learning and classroom organization,is a significant measure to cultivate students’ English subject core competencies,to reform teaching methods,and to improve English teaching effect.Reading class is an important class type of senior high school English teaching,which weighs much in English learning and is a crucial occasion for designing and implementing English learning activities.The current situation of learning activity design in senior high school’s reading class influences directly way and effects of students’ English learning,as well as the process of new curriculum reform.However,current researches have mostly focused on analyzing reading teaching cases based on the activity-based approach to English learning.There is a lack of empirical research,not to mention putting forward effective strategies to solve problems in English teaching,which also creates research space for this research.Taking the activity-based approach to English learning and deep learning as theoretical foundation,adopting the research approach following the step of “literature review – current situation investigation –strategy study – case implementation”,this study took 42 senior high school English teachers in Inner Mongolia as the research participants and explored the following research questions: 1.What’s the current situation of learning activity design in senior high school’s English reading class? 2.What are the existing problems with learning activity design in each phase of English reading class? 3.What are the strategies for learning activity design in senior high school’s English reading class?This study adopted questionnaire and classroom observation table as the main research instruments.As for data analysis,SPSS26.0 was used for quantitative statistical analysis of the questionnaire data;the observation content in class was analyzed by transcription.Based on the above results,this study put forward the strategies for learning activity design in senior high school’s English reading class from the perspective of activity-based approach to English learning.Meanwhile,this research conducted teaching design and implementation to testify the strategies,with a reading passage on the NSEFC book.What’s more,with the help of student interview,this study also collected evaluation on the implementation of learning activities.The research findings reveal that: 1.When designing reading learning activities,few English teachers interpret the text from perspectives of the author’s value orientation and language feature of texts;most of them ignore setting up the cultural awareness goals;few English teachers teach language points under thematic context and they pay less attention to designing activities of transferring and creating.2.In terms of different phases in senior high school reading teaching,there are some questions waiting to be solved.First,in the lead-in phase,the novice teacher spends too much time leaning in the topic.Second,in the phase of ability transferring,learning activities designed by the novice teacher lack communicative environment.Finally,the proficient teacher ignores the cultivation of students’ higher order thinking ability.3.The strategies for learning activity design are put forward based on the literature review and the previous investigation.First,analyze the holistic teaching unit objectives and the students’ needs according to the requirement of the curriculum standard.Second,interpret the reading text in detail and develop knowledge structure.Then,design classroom teaching objectives reflecting English subject core competencies.Fourth,design three levels of learning activities under the thematic context.Fifth,construct deep learning evaluation according to the teaching objective.All in all,this study combines activity-based approach to English learning with reading activity design in senior high school,conducts current situation investigation and strategy research.It is an innovative exploration of activity-based approach to English learning in the field of English reading teaching.The researcher hopes to inspire English teachers to explore more methods of reading learning activity design so as to improve students’ English reading ability.
