Ambiguity is an important feature in the process of foreign language learning,and in the process of foreign language learning,the unfamiliar,incomplete or ambiguous language phenomena will inevitably appear.As an important factor of individual differences,tolerance of ambiguity has been continuously concerned by language researchers,and related research on it has never been interrupted.Moreover,listening comprehension,as the primary input process of English learning,requires higher tolerance for ambiguous situations.Hence,it is necessary to research the correlation between the two,hoping to help the actual teaching effect.Based on affective filter hypothesis and schema theory,this research takes 123 students in the first grade of Ganzhou No.3 Middle School as the participants,and questionnaires and a test are made to answer the following questions:(1)What’s the general situation of senior high school students’ tolerance of ambiguity?(2)Is there a correlation between tolerance of ambiguity and English listening comprehension achievement? If so,what is the correlation?(3)Is there a correlation between tolerance of ambiguity and English listening strategy? If so,what is the correlation?The research findings are presented as follows:(1)The overall tolerance ambiguity in senior high school students is moderately low,and participants’ tolerance of ambiguity are mostly evenly distributed,and there is hardly tolerance ambiguity too high or too low.(2)There is a significant positive correlation between tolerance of ambiguity and listening achievements,namely,the higher the student’s tolerance,the higher the listening score.(3)There is a significant correlation between tolerance of ambiguity and listening strategies.The level of tolerance ambiguity will affect students’ listening strategy choices to a certain extent.Among them,cognitive strategies have the deepest impact,followed by meta cognitive strategies and social/affective strategy has the weakest impact.Based on the above conclusions,the two corresponding teaching suggestions are put forward: teachers should pay more attention to the learning of tolerance of ambiguity and cultivate students’ awareness of the use of listening strategies.By guiding students to choose appropriate listening strategies,improve their tolerance of ambiguity,thereby their listening comprehension are strengthened.
