The report is based on the translation practice of the first chapter in The Anarchy:the Relentless Rise of the East India Company. The book is a historical text, which mainly describes the rise and fall of the British East India Company. The original text covers many aspects such as politics, economy and culture in that historical period, which is a detailed and objective historical work. The content of the text is objective, the style of language is vivid and the structure of the sentence is complex, which has a high requirement for the translator’s ability. The part translated by the translator was selected from the first chapter of the book, which mainly introduced the establishment of the East India Company. And the translator translated the text in order to provide a new perspective for readers who interested in the development of the company.Guided by Nida’s functional equivalence theory, the translation practice report expounded the three key principles of appropriateness, naturalness and equivalence that proposed in the theory and the theoretical idea of taking the "readers’ response" as the core in the target language, and the report analyzed the problems encountered in the translation from two aspects: lexical equivalence and syntactic equivalence. In the first chapter of the report, the translator gave a detailed introduction to the translation task and the translation theory. Then,in the second chapter, the translator described the whole process of practice: pre-translation,mid-translation and post-translation.And Chapter three is the core of the report. In this chapter, the translator divided the difficulties encountered in translation into two levels: lexical level and syntactic level, and put forward the corresponding solutions. At the lexical level, the translator solved the translation difficulties through conversion of word classes, conversion of culture-loaded words and adding footnotes. At the syntactic level, the problems are solved through amplification, restructuring and the conversion of passive voice. Finally,in the last chapter, the translator summarized the whole process of translation and the report writing, and analyzed the translator’s gains and reflections in the practice in order to provide useful reference and experience for future translation practice.Through the translating of The Anarchy: the Relentless Rise of the East India Company, the translator had a further understanding of the development of the East India Company and the politics, economy and culture of the 17 th and 18 th centuries. The translation practice not only enriched the translator’s historical knowledge, but also broadened the her horizons,an the translator gained a lot from this practice. In addition, the translator also realized that her ability of translation and expression still need to be further improved through this translation. The translator hopes that the translation can help the people who interested in the East India Company to have a further understanding of the rise and fall of the company. At the same time,it is also expected that the translation skills used in this report can provide some references for translators to translating similar subjects.
