| The thesis focuses on Graham Greene’s four serious novels: Brighton Rock,The End of the Affair,The Quiet American and The Power and the Glory, analyzing the tragedy in Greene’s works,so as to understand the literary value and realistic significance of his novels in the decline of the social background after the World War II of the 20 th century. The tragedy in this thesis mainly refers to the irresistible suffering processes or situations faced by the characters in the social environment and their inner worlds. This kind of misery is not simply treated as the physical death or injury. It is a subject that “should not have suffered dreadfully” but encountered a huge, unimaginable spiritual impact or even destruction, that is the destruction of humanity. This kind of tragedy is manifested in this paper as a “good man” who encounters bad fortune, the positive value is not recognized, and the truth of the event is covered up.This thesis includes three parts:The first chapter mainly analyzes the concept of tragedy and its evolution, and explores the causes of tragedy in Greene’s novels. The tragedy in his novels is not only influenced by the social status at that time, but also closely related to his special life experience. The second chapter mainly analyzes the tragedy presentation of Greene’s four serious novels: the failure of good and the triumph of evil, the neglect of goodness, and the omission of truth, and examines Greene’s tragedy thinking on the social status and human nature of that time. The third chapter mainly discusses the tragedy reflected in the aesthetics of Greene’s novels from three ways: the inter-penetration of beauty and ugliness, the inter-penetration of hope and disillusionment, and the aesthetic reflection, thus highlighting the value of the good quality of human beings. The tragedy of Greene’s novels presents to readers incisively and vividly through the detailed description, and it strongly shocks our emotions by providing enlightenment to the reality and reflection on the meaning of current life. |
