This is a practice report on the E-C translation of medical book Human Viruses:Diseases,Treatments and Vaccines(Excerpts). This book introduces various DNA viruses and RNA viruses and offers a new perspective in view of the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases. This report selects the first chapter Introduction to Human Viruses as the research object and discusses the translation methods and techniques of medical texts under the guidance of Text Typology Theory by German functionalist Katharina Reiss.Reiss mainly divides the text into three categories: informative text, expressive text and operative text. The informative text pays attention to the content and transmission of facts such as information and knowledge;the expressive text focuses on the creative construction of text and aesthetic form of language;the operative text is aimed at persuading and stimulating readers to take certain actions. The author classifies the source text as informative text after analyzing its characteristic and function.Reiss proposes two criteria for the translation of informative text: one is that the language form of the translation should be oriented to the target language, the other is that the translation should be presented in a linguistic form familiar to target readers with complete information. Therefore, considering the characteristic of the text and these two criteria, the author analyzes the translation material from four aspects of accuracy, completeness, logic and fluency, and uses various methods and techniques to deal with the key and difficult problems during translation process.Specifically, the first aspect is to guarantee the accurate translation in terminology, proper noun and semi-technical term.Second, translation techniques of annotation and contextual amplification are adopted to completely convey the content.Third, the text is translated in concise and logical language.Fourth, guided by the feature of target language, the author employs conversion, combination and other techniques to convey the information fluently and idiomatically. With this translation practice conducted under the guidance of Text Typology, the author summarizes that Reiss’ s Text Typology Theory is helpful to translate medical texts, and it is hoped that this report may afford some reference on the translation of medical texts.
