| With the continuous enhancement of China’s comprehensive strength, the increasing number of diplomatic activities and the more frequently cultural exchanges, the translation work is gradually carried out,and translation research are also deepening, some domestic translation theories thus being recognized all over the world.Hu Gengshen,a famous professor of Tsinghua University, put forward Eco-Translatology theory, which is developed on the basis of Translation as Adaptation and Selection theory. The author chooses the principle "three-dimensional transformation" as the theoretical guidance, that is,to analyze what transformation strategies should be adopted in English-Chinese translation from the three dimensions of language, culture and communication,so as to obtain the high-quality translation under the guidance of this principle. The author chooses the fifth chapter of The Streets of Europe:the Sights,Sounds,Smells That Shaped Its Great Cities,a historical book published by Brian Ladd in 2020,as the text of this translation practice, carrying the translation activity. This translation activity can be divided into three processes:pre-translation,in-translation and post-translation.During the process of translation, the author mainly met the following problems:in the dimension of language, the source text uses lots of abstract nouns, prepositions, passive voice and attributive clauses, which do not conform to the expression habits of Chinese;in the cultural aspect, there are differences in content and thinking between the source language and the target language——the source text has a large number of expressions about European historical events, which are very strange to the target language readers, and it often puts critical words and sentences in front of facts;in the dimension of communication, there are a lot of sentences with inanimate objects as subjects in the source text, and many pronouns are used, which are not in line with the thinking logic of Chinese, and the source text also employs some rhetoric and parentheses to express the original author’s emotion and attitude. The logical mess and emotional ambiguity will make the target language readers have obstacles in understanding the article. To solve these problems, based on the guidance of the principle of"three-dimensional transformation",the author adopts the following solutions:in the aspect of language, the author uses more verbs and active voice,as well as splits and translates long and difficult sentences,so as to make the translation consistent with the expression habits of the target language readers;in the cultural dimension, the author uses the annotation method to explain the words with cultural connotation, and appropriately adjusts the position of critical words in order to achieve the greatest cultural exchange;in view of the communicative dimension, the author solves the logical ambiguity caused by the objects taken as subjects in the original text by adding personal subjects, and concretizes the translation of pronouns, and then the author chooses literal translation to retain their emotional function of rhetoric and parentheses, achieving the purpose of communication. |
