The ARCS model is a systematic model for motivating and sustaining motivation.Based on the model,Keller(1987a)provided four groups of strategies,including attention-getting strategy,relevance-producing strategy,confidencebuilding strategy,and satisfaction-generating strategy.Therefore,this study discusses from this perspective,and the research questions are presented as follows.(1)What are the characteristics of the number of types of ARCS motivational strategies used in English reading exemplary lessons of junior high schools?(2)What are the characteristics of the frequency of ARCS motivational strategies used by teachers in English reading exemplary lessons of junior high schools?(3)How are ARCS motivational strategies used by teachers in English reading exemplary lessons of junior high schools?In this study,class observations and interviews were used.The participants of the class observation are ten exemplary reading lessons.Through the integration of classroom observation scales and the analysis of classroom coding results,it is concluded that in reading teaching(1)Teachers often use a variety of different strategies to stimulate students’ motivation.(2)The attention-getting strategy and satisfaction-generating strategy are frequently used in reading lessons.(3)The use of ARCS motivational strategies not only has common characteristics in the whole lesson,such as showing more variability to catch students’ attention,but also shows its own characteristics in the three reading stages.The participants of the interview are five outstanding teachers of Tianjin No.90 Junior High School.The analysis of the interview results adopted the thematic analysis method.The interviews present the basic situation of teachers’ use of strategies and the reasons behind them,which further confirm and supplement the findings of classroom observations.Through the discussion of the above observations,combined with the content of the teacher’s interviews,some suggestions for the use of teachers’ motivational strategies are put forward.First,teachers are expected to adopt a variety of different strategies.Second,teachers should attach importance to the use of attention-getting strategy and satisfaction-generating strategy.Finally,teachers are expected to adopt appropriate strategies based on the characteristics of the three reading stages.
