| Our Ancestors Trilogy is the representative work of Italian writer Italo Calvino.The very interesting and imaginative Calvino has created three distinct protagonists in the trilogy,continuing his consistent thinking and exploration about fate and life.How modern people should face the various problems brought about by society,Calvino’s exploration of Our Ancestors not only enhances the depth of the novel,but also highlights the importance of the issue of redemption.Therefore this article intends to "redemption" as the starting point,takes Calvino’s Our Ancestors as the research object,and combines the relevant theories of religion,morality,aesthetics and other ideological aspects,through a specific analysis of the novel text,to show how Calvino works in Our Ancestors reveals the difficulty of belief and the failure of moral construction after the loss of religion,and finally completes the overcoming of the characters’ predicament and the reconstruction of the spiritual world in aesthetics.At the same time,the proposition of "redemption",which has both epochal and eternal significance,provides reference for people’s thinking about the predicament of existence.Before analyzing the redemption thought in Our Ancestors,we will explain the meaning of "redemption",and explore its essence on the basis of the original meaning,that is,to return to the eternal freedom and authenticity of life by means of religious expressions,which is a kind of light that is not covered.Then,it briefly outlines Calvino’s different attempts at religious redemption,moral redemption and aesthetic redemption in Our Ancestors,and at the same time horizontally contrasts the theme of "redemption" in Western literature to more deeply connect with social reality and further highlight human beings the general predicament that exists.By analyzing the human predicaments such as pride,spiritual conflict,alienation and so on,the characters in Our Ancestors not only show the necessity of the characters’ redemption,but also highlight the theme of this article-Calvino’s redemption thought.This article discusses Calvino’s redemption thought according to the basic context of "religious redemption-moral redemption-aesthetic redemption" in Our Ancestors.First of all,starting from Calvino’s religious redemption,this chapter not only expounds the specific operation mechanism of grace redemption in Our Ancestors,but also further clarifies the two ways of grace redemption.However,with the decline of religion,people have been unable to obtain redemption from God’s grace.This chapter analyzes in detail the reasons why the characters in the two works Il cavaliere che nonesiste and Il visconte che si divise a metà cannot complete religious redemption.The second is the discussion of Calvino’s moral redemption,from the moral inclination of the characters in Our Ancestors to see the similarities and differences between Calvino’s morality,Kant’s moral theology and Eastern morality.However,the lack of morality presented by the characters in the novel shows that the moral world in Our Ancestors has long since collapsed.Neither Eastern moral thought nor Kant’s moral theology can undertake the mission of redemption,and it is difficult for the protagonists to build an ideal moral and ethical society.Finally Calvino turns to aesthetic redemption.Putting Our Ancestors in the background of aesthetic redemption,it shows Calvino’s profound insights on aesthetic thought.It is not difficult to find the practical significance of the thought of aesthetic redemption in the review of western aesthetic thought at the beginning of this chapter.Then,through the three aspects of emotional imagination and allegorical writing embodied in the novel,poetic expression of subjectivity and emotional regression of the protagonists,this article points out Calvino’s redemption paths to readers,and reflects the spiritual exploration of Calvino’s literature on the ideal of life and the destiny of human nature,and also allows readers to understand his redemption thought more deeply and comprehensively.Finally,it expounds that Calvino’s thought of aesthetic redemption has an important revelation significance in the current society,and also discovers the limitations of the thought of aesthetic redemption. |
