A Study On The Status Quo And Influencing Factors Of The Mastery Of English Relative Clauses Among High School Students ——A Case Of Mianyang Anzhou High School

English Relative Clauses are significant in English grammar.At present,the research on influencing factors of English Relative Clauses mainly includes language universal properties,interlingual factors and intralingual factors.However,the senior high school students’ learning of English Relative Clauses is more worthy of study,and learners’ beliefs,strategies and teachers are also important influencing factors.Based on the Relative Clauses test,questionnaire and interview,103 first-year high school students from Mianyang Anzhou high school were selected as research objects.This study answers the following three questions:(1)What is the overall situation of high school students’ mastery of English Relative Clauses?(2)What are the differences in the mastery of English Relative Clauses between the higher and lower proficiency groups?(3)What are the major factors that influence their mastery of English Relative Clauses?The research showed that:(1)The students’ overall mastery of English Relative Clauses is not good enough(M=66.83).The English-Chinese translation has the highest score(the correct rate is81.13%),and grammatical choice has the lowest score(the correct rate is 55.90%).In terms of English Relative Clause types,students do best at Subject(SU)(the correct rate is 81.3%)and perform worst at Object of a Comparison(OCOMP)(the correct rate is 51.1%).The acquisition order from easy to hard for overall students is: Subject,Genitive,Direct Object,Indirect Object,Object of a Preposition,Object of a Comparison.(2)The higher proficiency group’s overall mastery of the English Relative Clauses(M=73.21)is better than that of the lower proficiency group(M=62.95).Specifically,the higher proficiency group performs better in grammatical choice,grammatical judgment,sentence combination and translation task.The most significant difference between the two groups is in grammatical judgment task.In all tasks,students in the higher proficiency group perform better than students in the lower proficiency group in all Relative Clause types.The acquisition order of different Relative Clauses types of the two groups in grammatical judgment,grammatical choice and combination sentence are all different.(3)The major factors affecting the mastery of English Relative Clauses are learners’ Learning Beliefs(P=0.002<0.05),Formal Practice Strategies(P=0.023<0.05),and Functional Practice Strategies(P=0.001<0.05).Based on above findings,some suggestions are put forward for English teaching:Consider the influence of various factors on English Relative Clauses,and instruct according to the acquisition order of different English Relative Clause types;Pay attention to both of the comprehension ability and the output ability;Improve students’ sense of achievement;Pay attention to the interesting ways for teaching;Make full use of time resources after class,and increase their use of English Relative Clauses in communication.
