| By far,China has become a great power of machinery manufacturing in the word and its mechanical equipment is exported not only to emerging countries in Africa and Asia, but also to some developed countries in Europe and America.Especially during the coronavirus epidemic,China’s foreign trade of mechanical equipment is ahead of the rest of the world. In the future,China’s machinery manufacturing industry still has bright and broad prospects. For that reason, the demand for the English translation of mechanical equipment instructions is also rising sharply. The translator excerpts two chapters from the Heat Recovery Charging-pusher Machine Operation Manual as the translation material of this practice report. The main target readers of this manual are equipment operators. The text mainly introduces the product review, installation and commissioning of the equipment, which has both informative function and expressive function. There are a large number of mechanical technical terms and complex sentences with obvious syntactic features, bringing great challenges to the translator. In this translation practice report, guided by Peter Newmark’s communicative translation theory, the translator focuses on the translation methods of the mechanical equipment instruction at the lexical, syntactical and textual level. At the lexical level, the translator puts emphasis on the translation of mechanical terminology and nominalization. At the syntactic level, the translator mainly discusses the translation methods of non-subject sentences and complex sentences. At the textual level, the translator makes a specific analysis of the terminology consistency. This translation practice proves that Peter Newmark’s communicative translation theory has a practical guiding significance for the translation of mechanical equipment instructions, which can help translators accurately and fluently convey the information to achieve the same expression effect of the original text.Although the abilities of translation and research are limited, the translator still hopes that this translation practice report can provide some reference and help to other translators who study the English translation of mechanical equipment instruction. |
