The Lucky Culture and the Rise of an Australian Ruling Class was a current affair review book written by Nick Cater,senior editor of The Australian.He was a witness for changes taking place in Australia in the past several decades.In his view the reasons for the changes were that government and other public institutions were filled with “educated middle-class left-wing minority”,whose values were dramatically different from that of traditional Australians.Traditional values such as egalitarianism and mateship were challenged by the trend of polarization.The author selects chapter one and chapter eleven as the translation materials,which are the overview of Australian society and educational system.China can possibly apply the experience drawn from Australian society to China’s social governance.The author finds the difficulties of translation lie in the implied expressions,culture-loaded words,long and complicated sentences and unfamiliar cultural background.Therefore,explicitation strategies are adopted to make the translation more explicit and reader-friendly at three levels.At semantic level,the translation methods can be summarized as adding annotations and using explicit expressions;at grammatical level,tense marker and number markers are added;at discourse level,the author make explicit pronouns and logical relations.The translation strategies and methods employed in this report might be applied in other translation practices in the future.
