A Study Of The Coping Strategies For Redundancy In Chinese-English Consecutive Interpreting ——A Case Study Of Sightseeing Interpreting In Guyi Garden

As an approach for cross-cultural communication,consecutive interpreting serves as a bridge to introducing Chinese culture to the outside world.However,redundancy in the source language has caused obstacles to efficient cross-cultural communication,and what strategies interpreters need to take to deal with the redundancy in interpreting has been one of the focuses of scholars at home and abroad.When the author conducted a sightseeing interpreting task in Guyi Garden,as the source language is colloquial and has a lot of redundant information,it provides the material for the author to study the interpreting strategies of redundancy.Guided by the interpretive theory and the economic principle of language,this study focuses on the coping strategies for redundancy in Chinese-English interpreting by using the sightseeing interpretation task in the Guyi Garden as the material for analysis.The redundancy can be divided into two categories: semantic redundancy and contextual redundancy.In coping with semantic redundancy,the author puts forward three strategies: omitting meaningless filler words,compressing synonyms,and omitting repetition of words.In dealing with contextual redundancy,the author puts forward the strategy of sorting out the logic.The strategies proposed by the author for dealing with redundancy in interpreting could provide some guidance for interpreters in the future.
