With the promulgation of the General High School English Curriculum Standards(2017 edition),the cultivation of core competencies in English has attracted massive discussion and research among educators and scholars.The cultural awareness in core competencies represents the value orientation of English subject,which has rich connotation and high research value in cultural teaching.For ethnic minority students in China,the connotation of cultural awareness is enriched by the important educational meaning of national security,national identity,cultural identity,and national unity: that is,to maintain a firm political stance,to improve the ability to distinguish right from wrong,to strengthen the identification with Chinese culture,and to never do anything to damage national interests or national unity.The author elaborates on the significance and necessity of cultivating cultural awareness among high school students in ethnic minority regions in our country from the standpoint of the special features and characteristics of their English learning.In the study,the author applies literature research,case study method,text analysis method to clarify the specific goals that need to be achieved in the cultivation of cultural awareness among high school students from ethnic minorities,and makes some practical suggestions from the English teachers’ perspective for better practice the cultivation of cultural awareness in the core competencies of English subjects.
