Current teaching practice in high school heavily relies on textbooks, which can’t satisfy requirements put forward by the new curriculum standards.Based on the situation, the case study investigates what impact English children’s literature reading has on learners’ writing skills in a senior high school.Furthermore, the present study also looks into the differences between writing after reading and regular writing from the perspective of students. The case study was designed to assign 33 learners to read three picture books over a 11-week period. Both quantitative and qualitative analysis methods were adopted through learners’ written texts before and after the reading project, questionnaires and semi-structured interview. The result suggests that the reading project led to improvement in the performance of students’ writing skills, especially the fluency and use of adverbials.Compared to regular writing, writing after literature reading is more effective in promoting students’ motivation to read and write, widening their vocabulary learning and helping them construct meaning out of the text. The case study raises questions about the practice of heavy reliance on the official textbooks and puts forward a way to enrich English curriculum resources.
