A Study On Translation Of Crossing 2000 Years On The Silk Road From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

Documentary has always played the role of cultural communication between different nations,which subtitles’ importance cannot be underestimated.Thus,it is very important for the theoretical and practical research of subtitle translation.It can be seen that subtitle translation of documentary films,as a relatively new research field,deserves further exploration.The research object of this thesis is the documentary Crossing 2000 Years on the Silk Road.Taking Vermeer’s Skopos theory as the theoretical framework,through qualitative and quantitative analysis methods,the author organizes the Chinese-English subtitle in the documentary Crossing 2000 Years on the Silk Road.This thesis discusses the translation methods and translation strategies applied in this documentary and the factors that influence the translator’s translation method when the translator did in the subtitle translation research,which aims at proving that Skopos theory has practical significance for guiding the practice of Chinese-English subtitle translation of documentaries.Based on Skopos theory,translation methods and translation strategies have been analyzed in this documentary.Here is the main conclusion.Firstly,under the Skopos rule,the translator applies foreignization translation strategy.So literal translation and interpretative translation are applied when key and unique cultural information is involved in order to preserve the connotation of the source language and resolve the difficulties.Secondly,under the coherence rule,the translator follows the domestication in order to make the translation more completely reflect the original author’s intention and the similar utterance has occurred in original text and target text,inversion,addition and reduction translation methods are used.Lastly,under the fidelity rule,the translator obeys the domestication.And when the difference in pragmatic habits between the source text and the target text is a little,the translator mostly applies metaphase and substitution.It is hoped that this thess can offer new opinions and complements for documentary subtitle translation and this topic can provide a new perspective for the study of Crossing 2000 Years on the Silk Road.And it will help foreign readers understand the importance of building the "Belt and Road" in all aspects,demonstrate the Chinese government’s contribution to promoting world economic development and enhance my country’s international influence.
