The geography teacher training programme of provincial normal universities(hereinafter referred to as normal universities)is the cradle of training geography teachers for high schools and assumes the important task of providing qualified geography teachers for high schools. The new round of college entrance examination reform(hereinafter referred to as the new college entrance examination),which was launched in 2014,has put forward new requirements for the professional competence of high school geography teachers, and as a result, high schools have put forward corresponding demands for the training of high school geography teachertraining students(hereinafter referred to as the demand for high school teachers). The current situation of teacher professional competency of geography teacher-training students is in line with the needs of high school teachers, which is the objective that should be achieved by the training of geography teacher-training majors in high schools.Based on the perspective of the New College Entrance Examination(NCE),evaluating the extent to which the professional competencies of geography teachertraining students fit the needs of senior secondary school teachers can provide a basis for optimising the training programmes of geography teacher-training majors and implementing the requirements of the NCE reform. However, the gap between the professional competencies of geography teacher-training students and the needs of senior secondary school teachers under the perspective of the New College Entrance Examination is still unclear and needs to be quantitatively analysed and revealed.Based on the Standards of Teacher Professional Competence for Teacher Training Students in Secondary Education(for Trial Implementation)and other standards, the Teacher Professional Competence Index System for Geography Teacher Training Students in Higher Education was constructed, and the evaluation criteria for teacher needs, current situation of competence and fit were formulated by drawing on methods such as the grading of academic level examinations for high school students.Using questionnaires, comprehensive evaluation and statistical analysis,306 senior geography teacher trainees and 331 high school geography teachers from seven high school teachers in Guizhou Province as the research subjects, the new requirements of the new college entrance examination for high school geography teachers’ professional competencies were analysed, and the expectations of high schools for the training of senior geography teacher trainees were clarified;the current situation of senior geography teacher trainees’ professional competencies and their fit with the needs of high school teachers were evaluated, revealing Based on the evaluation results,we propose strategies to cultivate the professional competence of senior geography teacher candidates under the perspective of the New College Entrance Examination. The main findings of the study are as follows.(1)The overall requirements of the New College Entrance Examination for the professional competence of senior secondary geography teachers are at a medium level, and the needs of senior secondary teachers mainly show four new aspects of the New College Entrance Examination.Firstly, the "optional examination" requires geography teachers to improve their abilities in student guidance, educational sentiment, curriculum development and language expression;secondly, the "class walking" requires geography teachers to improve their abilities in class management, curriculum education, analysis of learning conditions and classroom control;thirdly, the "new curriculum" requires geography teachers to improve their abilities in class management, curriculum education, analysis of learning conditions and classroom control. The "New Curriculum" requires geography teachers to improve their subject knowledge, interpretation of standards, curriculum development, teaching reflection, test analysis and other skills;fourth, the "Higher Education Examination Evaluation System" requires geography teachers to improve their subject knowledge, curriculum development and teacher ethics.(2)The professional competencies of fourth-year geography teacher trainees in provincial normal universities are generally good, but there are gaps between the competencies of independent development and teaching practice and the needs of high school teachers. In terms of independent development, the three competencies of educational research, career planning and communication and cooperation are basically not in line with the needs of senior secondary school teachers, and the deviation is relatively large. In terms of teaching practice, the four subject competencies of geography cognition, reasoning, spatial thinking and innovation, and the four teaching competencies of interpretation of standards, practical guidance, teaching reflection and test question analysis do not match the needs of senior secondary school teachers, and the deviation is relatively large.(3)There are differences in the degree of fit between the professional competencies of geography teacher trainees and the needs of high school teachers, showing their respective strengths and "shortcomings".Geography teacher trainees from provincial and local colleges share common strengths in teacher ethics, teaching implementation, classroom management, character education, student guidance, drawing and painting, and geography teaching aids, etc.;they also have "shortcomings" in educational research, career planning, communication and cooperation,self-reflection,and teaching evaluation.Compared with local colleges, geography teacher trainees in provincial key normal universities have comparative advantages in terms of subject knowledge, teaching design and curriculum education.(4)It is recommended that both the provincial key normal universities and local colleges strengthen the demand orientation, align themselves with the new requirements of the New College Entrance Examination for high school geography teachers, and continuously improve the curriculum and teaching strategies of the geography teacher training programme.Specifically, the provincial key normal universities should focus on the cultivation of geography teacher-training students’ abilities in educational research, career planning and teaching evaluation, and offer courses such as "Geography Education Research Methods and Case Analysis","Geography Teacher Training Students’ Career Planning and Geography Career Guidance for High School Students" and "Geography Test Question Analysis and Formulation";local colleges should give priority to the cultivation of subject literacy, interpretation of curriculum standards, curriculum development and curriculum education, and offer courses such as Courses such as "Study of Typical Lesson Cases for Cultivating Core Literacy in Geography","Guidance on Practical Geography Activities in Secondary Schools","Geography and Ecological Civilization Education in Guizhou",etc.
