| In 1919,the British sinologist Samuel Couling founded The New China Review in Shanghai. The New China Review was published in four volumes by Kelly&Walsh Limited and was intended as a successor to The China Review,a sinology journal that had ceased publication in 1901.Most of the articles in the journal were of a high academic standard, demonstrating the characteristics of traditional British sinology during its boom period. In the context of The New China Review, the confusion and transformation of British sinology at the end of the 19 th century was one of the main reasons for its publication, and the new demands on the medium at the turn of the century were the main reason for the choice of the Kelly&Walsh Limited. The distribution network of Kelly&Walsh Limited is centred on the coastal metropolis and is transported via international routes, which is the main way to maximise its impact.Compared to The China Review, the editorial team of The New China Review is more academic and professional, and its focus on exchanges between Chinese and Western academics and its precise capture of academic hotspots in Chinese academia is a reflection of the new philosophy of academicism. As a pioneering journal in the study of Anglo-American sinology,The New China Review’s emphasis on the timeliness and factuality of the articles it publishes is a reflection of the academic sinological philosophy it upholds. This philosophy is also evident in the two Sinological debates documented in the journal. In short,The New China Review, while inheriting the academic tradition of The China Review, reflects the new demands of the turn-of-the-century British academy on the development of sinology, both in its philosophy and in the selection of its contributors. It has provided a broader platform for the development of sinology in the English-speaking world in the 20 th century. |
