The report is based on the translation practice of Western Body and Beauty in Chapter Two,Section One of Fashion and Body Aesthetics. This section takes time as a line to probe into the relationship between “body” and “clothing” in the West from ancient Greek time,Middle Ages,Renaissance to the 19 th century. As a research work on costume culture,Fashion and Body Aesthetics relates to philosophy, aesthetics, sociology and costume knowledge, presenting strong logic and abstraction in text expression. In addition,Western Body and Beauty quotes a lot of classics, tracing back the western concept of body in depth, thus to pose certain challenges to understanding and translation.Under the guidance of Relevance Theory, the translator has conducted background research and content analysis of the source text before translation, striving to master its essence and linguistic features,so as to provide a basis for contextual effect for the target text and achieve the optimal relevance.Taking cognitive principle and communicative principle into consideration, during translation and post-translation,the translator uses amplification, paraphrase and omission to offer explicit translation at the lexical level;at the syntactic level, the strategy of conversion, omission and restructuring are adopted through transformation;at the discourse level, division, restructuring and cohesion are chosen to achieve maximum relevance and optimal relevance. The report is divided into six parts.Part one is a brief introduction;part two illustrates the background of the task and its significance;part three narrates the whole process of pre-translation,in-translation and post-translation;part four lays the theoretical base for the translation;part five is case analysis based on relevance theory;part six is findings and limitations.
