A Report On The E-C Translation Of A History Of Greece （Chapters 13-14）

This is a practice report on English-Chinese translation,and the source text is excerpted from A History of Greece（Chapters 13-14）written by Evelyn Abbott.Chapter Thirteen mainly introduces the life experience,reform,constitution and other historical events of Solon,the ancient Greek statesman,while Chapter Fourteen mainly introduces the rise and fall of the ancient Greek city-state Sparta.The text type selected by the translator belongs to the informative text of Reiss’ s text type theory.In the process of translation,the translator encountered many difficulties.At the lexical level,some proper nouns,like names of people and places cannot be found in the existing dictionaries and literature,and cultural background differences cause difficulties in translating culture-loaded words.In addition,some evaluative words and words with profound connotations need to be considered in translation.The difficulties in syntax mainly focus on translating non-restrictive attributive clauses,inanimate subject sentences,and long and complex sentences.Given the difficulties,the translator adopted corresponding translation methods.At the lexical level,the translator mainly adopts transliteration,annotation,using four-character Chinese idioms and meaning extension.At the syntactic level,according to the characteristics of sentence structure,the translator adopted combination and division methods for non-restrictive attributive clauses.When tackling inanimate subject sentences,the translator added a subject and translated it into an adverbial.When handling long and complex English sentences,the translator employed the translation methods of splitting and recasting.It is hoped that this translation report will provide an opportunity for the Greek history enthusiasts to gain an insight into Greek culture and contribute to the study of Greek works in translation.
