A Study Of Interpreting Coping Tactics Of EST Interpreting From The Perspective Of Effort Model ——Based On Huawei Harmony Os 2 Press Conference In 2021

With Gile’s Effort Model as foundation,this thesis investigates EST interpreting tactics.Previous studies have discussed the strategies of EST interpreting from different theories,however,the tactics of EST interpreting from the standpoint of the Effort Model require further investigation.Simultaneous interpreting is distinguished by its instantaneity.This process is extremely complex,including a series of cognitive processing links such as language information reception,decoding,memory,coding and re-expression.Gile’s Effort Model proposes that simultaneous interpreting consists of Listening and Analysis Effort（L）,Short-term Memory Effort（M）,Speech Production Effort（P）and Coordination Effort（C）.Gile holds that interpretation is a very taxing procedure that depletes the interpreter’s mental resources.The quality of interpreters’ interpretation will degrade if they are unable to distribute their energy efficiently while juggling many jobs.This thesis uses the Effort Model to study the coping tactics of EST interpreting from the Listening and Analysis Effort,Short-term Memory Effort,Speech Production Effort and Coordination Effort and focuses on the following questions:（1）What interpreting tactics can the interpreter use in Listening and Analysis Effort?（2）What interpreting tactics can the interpreter use in Short-term Memory Effort?（3）What interpreting tactics can the interpreter adopt in Speech Production Effort?（4）What interpreting tactics can the interpreter adopt in Coordination Effort?This thesis focuses on the combination of theoretical analysis and practical examples,and the corpus is selected from the simultaneous interpreting text of Huawei Harmony OS 2 Press Conference.Aiming at the difficulties of rich professional terminologies,high information density and complex syntactic structure in EST interpreting,this thesis discusses the L,M,P,C in the process of interpretation,and puts forward the corresponding interpreting tactics.（1）In Listening and Analysis Effort,interpreting tactics include delay strategy and comprehension strategy.（2）In Short-term Memory Effort,interpreting tactics include inductive strategy and anticipation.（3）In Speech Production Effort,interpreting tactics include chunking,conversion and simplification.（4）In Coordination Effort,interpreting tactics include EVS extension and EVS curtailment.This study finds that whatever strategy is adopted,it is to ensure the coordinated distribution of energy and improve the quality of simultaneous interpretation.
