| Cohesion is an important means to ensure discourse coherence.Due to its rigorous language and strong logic, academic texts are widely used in cohesive devices. However, abundant cohesive devices also cause some difficulties in translation practice because of the differences in cohesive mechanisms between Chinese and English. The translators will ensure the quality of translation and reproduce the professionalism and preciseness of academic texts as long as they make a perfect conversion of the devices.Based on this, the translation practice report selects some chapters of Institutional Translation and Interpreting as source text,an English academic monograph concerned institutional translation, analyzing the cohesion problems in translation practice, and then propose corresponding solutions.Through the translation and in-depth analysis of the text, the cohesion problems in this translation practice can be summarized as follows: The first problem is unclear referential cohesion, including ambiguous reference of demonstrative pronouns and frequent use of personal pronouns. The second problem is the frequent occurrence of ellipsis, including the prominent nominal ellipsis and the frequent verbal ellipsis. The third problem is unconspicuous connection mode, including implicit causal relationship and unclear transitional relationship.Through in-depth analysis of typical examples in the text, specific solutions are proposed to solve these cohesion problems. To solve the problem of unclear referential cohesion, this thesis proposes to clarify the meaning of demonstrative pronouns and to delete redundant personal pronouns. To solve the problem of ellipsis, this thesis proposes to compensate nominal words and verbal words. To solve the problem of unconspicuous connection mode, this thesis proposes to highlight the causal relationship and clarify the transition relationship. The cohesion problems and corresponding solutions summarized in this report are all derived from this translation practice, hoping to provide some references for dealing with cohesion problems in academic texts or other text translation in the future. |
