In recent years, the number of suicides among college students has been increasing and has become a hot social issue in China. This translation practice selected the news reports on“suicide among college students” in The New York Times in recent 10 years as the translation corpus to examine the causes of suicides in American colleges and universities and the measures dealing with the issue,to improve Chinese readers’ understanding of suicides on American campus and to increase awareness of this issue in Chinese society.Journalistic texts are featured by objectivity, authenticity and rigorous logic. The main problems encountered in this translation practice are the translation of implicit connections and the translation of implicit demonstratives.Identifying cohesion is the key to understanding the original text and is helpful to translate its logic and implications. To solve the translation problems caused by the implicit connections, the translator puts forward the method of adding explicit conjunctions and the method of transformation. To solve the translation problems caused by implicit demonstratives, the translator puts forward the method of repeating nouns or noun phrases and supplementing information. It is hoped that this translation practice report can provide some reference for translation of similar texts in the future.
