A Report On The E-C Translation Of The Freedom Circus（Chapters 16-20）

This report is an English-Chinese translation report.The original text is Chapter16 to Chapter 20 of the documentary literary work The Freedom Circus.The Freedom Circus is a work about survival,love and the circus.It tells the story of a family fighting against death in order to escape the Nazis and start a new life in Australia.It is of great translation value,because historical knowledge is an indispensable part of our lives.Today in peaceful times,we are not staying in war,but we all need to have a certain understanding of the past war life.Reading literary works enables more people to understand the past wars and is a good way to spread history and culture.In this translation practice report,the translator considered the translation process and summarized the translation difficulties at the lexical,syntactic and textual levels.At the lexical level,the translation difficulties include the translation of culture-loaded terms and the transformation of parts of speech,as well as the translation of obscure expressions,long sentences,and passive voice translation at the syntactic level,and textual cohesiveness and translation of pronouns.In response to these translation difficulties,the translator has adopted corresponding translation methods,including annotation and conversion at lexical-level,amplification,restructuring,and converting the passive voice into the active at syntactic-level,as well as adding conjunctions and concretizing pronouns at textual level.The translator also enumerates and analyzes the corresponding example sentences.Through this translation practice,the translator’s translation ability has been improved,and has got a deeper understanding of various translation theories,translation strategies and translation methods,and use them more appropriately.This translation practice also allows the translator to understand that to complete an excellent translation,the translator needs to have excellent bilingual writing skills,a deep understanding of the differences between English and Chinese languages,and the ability to deal with problems flexibly.I hope this translation practice report can serve as a reference for later translation practice report.
